A passenger airplane crashed into lagoon while trying to land at an airport in Federated States of Micronesia. Happilly, everyone onboard was rescued, officials said. There are no reports of serious injuries.
The incident happened at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, September 28, when Air Niugini Flight 73 was flying out of Pohnpei to Chuuk Airport, Weno island, where it was due to make a stop prior to continuing on to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
According to Jimmy Emilio, Chuuk International Airport's manager, the plane had been approaching Runway 4 when it had crashed into the lagoon, around 160 yards (146 m) from the runway.
The Boeing 737-800 was flying with a total of 47 people onboard, including 11 crew members and 36 passengers. All of them were rescued via small boats.
The cause of the accident wasn't immediately known.
Air Niugini is the PNG national airline and doesn't have a history of serious accidents.
