A pilot died while flying volunteer mission for Angel Flight West group when his small airplane crashed in Palo Alto on Tuesday, Septmber 4, according to fire officials.
The pilot's name has yet to be released. He crashed the single engine fixed wing Mooney airplane as he was trying to land at Palo Alto Airport.
The crashed aircraft was registered to an owner living in Placerville, presumed to be the pilot, though that hasn't been officially confirmed.
According to Santa Monica-based Angel Flight West, the pilot was transporting one of the 2 passengers to be treated at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford.
Air Traffic control audio indicated the pilot had been having trouble landing.
NTSB investigator said the plane had bounced on the runway at the first attempt to land. It had crashed during the 2nd attempt as it had made a "go around."
