A "suicidal" employee at Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle stole an empty aircraft Friday night for a joyride, performing dangerous maneuvers under pursuit by F-15 fighter jets prior to crashing into an island.
The 29yo pilot is presumed dead after Bombardier Q400, which was stolen from Horizon Airlines, slammed into Ketron Island, around 30 miles south of the airport.
Video shows the 76-seat airplane doing loops and other dangerous maneuvers.
The amateur pilot, whose named wasn't released, was described as a "suicidal male", resident of the county, but not a terrorist. According to Alaska Airlines, he was an employee who helped direct aircraft to gates and de-ice planes.
Only minutes after the airplane made its unauthorized takeoff around 8:00 p.m., North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled a couple of F-15s from Portland to intercept it. The fighters were trying to direct him out over the Pacific when it went down but didn't fire on the aircraft.
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) sent a 45-foot ship to the crash scene after witnesses reported seeing a plume of smoke in the air.
Alaska Airlines announced the plane was in “maintenance position” when it had been stolen and not scheduled for passenger flight. The Q400 is a turboprop airplane with 76 seats.
According to FBI's Seattle office, the investigation is still ongoing. The information gathered "does not suggest a terrorist threat or additional, pending criminal activity."
