The U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday, July 10, rescued 11 people after their charter plane crashed on Prince of Wales Island close to Ketchikan, Alaska.
According to a Coast Guard spokesperson, all onboard were alive, but some had been injured in the crash. The pilot and 10 passengers were transported via a helicopter to a staging area located on the eastern end of the isle en route to Ketchikan, where they were evaluated prior to being taken to Ketchikan General Hospital.
The crash site is 2,000 ft above sea level in mountainous area.
Mike Kahle, Coast Guard commander and Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, praised the pilot, who had kept the passengers safe while landing the aircraft in uneven terrain. The pilot called 911 when float equipped de Havilland Canada DHC-3T Turbo Otter seaplane crashed.
Alaska State Troopers alerted the U.S. Coast Guard about the crash at 8:50 a.m. local time.
