In a statement, Vasu Raja, vice president, Network & Schedule Planning, said that Reykjavik had become a very popular leisure destination and they looked forward to giving their customers the opportunity to experience the unique landscape of volcanos, hot springs and geysers of Iceland with the new direct service next summer.

The route will be flown on a Boeing 757-200, which features lie-flat Business Class seats.

American Airlines will be the 3rd US airline to offer direct service to Iceland. Delta Air Lines has been offering such service for some years now from Minneapolis and New York in the summer, and began year-round NYC-Iceland service this year. United also plans to offer direct service between Iceland and New York next summer.

The Icelandic carriers WOW Air and Icelandair offer direct service between Iceland and a number of destinations across Canada and the United States.
