Alitalia (Societa Aerea Italiana, Italian Air Company), operating as Alitalia, is Italy's flag carrier. The head office of the company is based in Fiumicino, Rome, Italy.
The main hub of Alitalia is Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, Rome, while the secondary one is Linate Airport, Milan. Four other focus airports include Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, Palermo Airport, Naples Airport and Milan-Malpensa Airport. In 2014, Alitalia was the 11th-largest airline in Europe.
The name "Alitalia" is Italian portmanteau of the two words ali (wings), Italia (Italy). On May 2, 2017 the carrier went into administration after the government of the country formally approved the move.
Alitalia serves nearly 100 destinations (97 according to April 2016 data).
Alitalia has been a member of the SkyTeam alliance since 2009 (originally, Alitalia-LAI joined in 2001). Alitalia airline has since arranged code-share agreements with members of SkyTeam, allowing passengers to fly to a lot of destinations (with some or the segments operated by other airlines) using a single ticket of Alitalia.
In July 2010, the Alitalia company also joined the transatlantic Joint Venture of Air France, Delta and KLM, meaning that the profits from routes across the Atlantic are shared between the 4 airlines.
