Virgin Australia Airlines Pty Ltd (former Virgin Blue Airlines), is the 2nd-largest airline in Australia after Qantas and the largest carrier by fleet size to use "Virgin" brand. Currently based in Bowen Hills, Brisbane, it was co-founded by the founder of parent Virgin Group, British businessman Richard Branson, and former Virgin Blue CEO Brett Godfrey.
Virgin Australia Airlines was established in November 1999 with 2 aircraft which were operating on a single route, and soon found itself at the position of second airline in Australia after the Ansett Australia's collapse in September 2001. Virgin Australia Airlines grew to directly serve 29 Australian cities from hubs located in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, using a narrow-body Boeing and Embraer jets' fleet, along with Boeing and Airbus widebody jets.
After a few years operating as low-cost carrier Virgin Australia Airlines improved its services and became the so-called "New World Carrier", a business model offering the passenger the choice of purchasing a ticket with aspects of "no frills" approach of low-cost airlines or paying a little more to receive services more in line with full-service airlines, to compete with Qantas in business travel market. Virgin Australia took the strategy further in 2011, via introducing new catering options onboard, new uniforms, and new widebody aircraft to compete on Perth–Melbourne–Sydney services. Company's business class was introduced in January 2012, along with a new livery and renaming to Virgin Australia.
An agreement with Boeing was signed on April 1, 2010 for an order of 50 firm Boeing 737-800 aircraft, featuring flexibility to convert to either Boeing 737-900ERs or Boeing 737-700s, as well as 30 future purchase rights and 25 additional options. Deliveries were completed in 2017. In the middle of 2012, Virgin Australia unveiled an order for a total of 23 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Deliveries are scheduled between 2019-2021. In 2015, Virgin Australia Airlines converted an order for 17 Boeing 737-800 aircraft to MAX model, bringing the total order for the type to 40 aircraft.
In July 2015 the company launched Virgin Australia Cargo after its contract on behalf of Toll expired and wasn't renewed. In 2016 the carrier signed a 5-year carriage contract with TNT. Operations of dedicated freighter aircraft started on July 4, the same year.
